Student leaders nationwide have responded to the appointment of Sunday Asefon, former President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), as the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Students Engagements. It was verified that his appointment was communicated through a letter dated October 31, 2023, from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
The G7, a collective of student leaders, characterized his appointment as a fitting choice. The statement, signed by Olusegun Clement, Former Special Assistant on Students Affairs to Former Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State, expressed the belief that Tinubu made the right decision in selecting Asefon to engage with Nigerian students on his behalf.
Clement emphasized that Asefon’s track record as the immediate past NANS President serves as evidence that he is capable of fulfilling his responsibilities. The student leader assured Tinubu that students nationwide would actively support his government.
The statement read in part, “We have received the news of the appointment of the former President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Comrade Sunday Asefon, as the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Students engagements.
“This development has rekindled the trust of Nigerian students and youths in the government of Mr. Tinubu. This move, to us, is a testament that Mr. President understands the principles of ‘putting a round peg in a round hole.’
“Not just his achievements while in office as the president of NANS, but his character, whom I have known for years, will make me quickly align with the president that Mr. Asefon will deliver on his new appointment.
“I, Chief Clement, G7, and other student leaders in Nigeria, particularly in the Southwest region, express our joy to the president, assuring that our structures across the country will do everything possible to support your government henceforth.”
