The Organised Labour last night issued a directive for all affiliate unions to resume work on Thursday, marking the end of the indefinite strike that commenced on Tuesday, November 14.
The suspension of the strike came after the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, intervened and following the arrest of some individuals involved in the assault on Nigeria Labour Congress President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, on November 1 in Owerri, the Imo state capital.
In a statement signed by Comrade Emmanuel Ugbaja, the NLC General Secretary, and Comrade Nuhu Toro, the Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, the labour centers announced the suspension to facilitate further discussions. This decision followed the federal government’s compliance with the organized labour’s vital demands addressing the distressing abduction and brutalization of Comrade Joe Ajaero and others.
The statement highlighted the resolution reached after a thorough review of the government’s offers presented through the National Security Adviser. It mentioned the apology extended by the NSA on behalf of the government and the promise to coordinate the investigation. It acknowledged the arrests made and assurances of apprehending all perpetrators, emphasizing the ongoing high-powered investigation with continuous briefings to the labor centers on progress.
The directive commended affiliates and state councils for their unwavering commitment and urged them to cease the indefinite strike action and fully resume work on Thursday, November 16. It expressed gratitude for the cooperation, resilience, and determination shown during the nationwide strike, urging vigilance while awaiting the fulfillment of the remaining agreements.
