The German Ambassador to Nigeria, Annett Günther, announced on Thursday that the trade volume between both countries reached €3 billion in 2022.
Günther shared this information during a press conference, highlighting the key export categories between the two nations. She mentioned that Germany’s primary exports to Nigeria include machinery (28%), food products (20%), and chemical products (19%), while Nigeria’s main exports to Germany consist of crude oil (83%), food products (12%), and other raw materials (4%).
Furthermore, Günther disclosed that 2,000 Nigerians passed the German language examinations at the Goethe Institute in 2022, and approximately 4,000 Nigerian students were studying in Germany.
She also noted that there are currently about 90 German companies operating in Nigeria, directly creating 17,000 jobs and indirectly contributing to a minimum of 10-fold that number.
Germany has made substantial investments in development projects across various sectors in Nigeria, amounting to over €600 million, making it the second-largest donor. In addition, Germany pledged €620 million to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Regarding humanitarian assistance, Germany ranks as the second-largest contributor, allocating €50 million in 2022 for activities such as protection, food security, health, and shelter, which play a crucial role in saving lives daily.
