Prominent Nigerian media personality, Toke Makinwa, delivered a piece of advice to women during one of her talk shows, suggesting that they refrain from requesting things from men that they themselves cannot afford. She emphasized that it’s not appropriate for women to expect their partners to provide things that they are unable to purchase independently.
Toke Makinwa stressed the importance of women being self-reliant and not depending on men for financial support. She encouraged women to maintain their independence and work diligently towards achieving their goals, rather than consistently relying on men to cater to their needs.
In a recent episode of her podcast, TokeMoments, she issued a caution to women regarding the excessive demands they place on their male partners. She pointed out that this behavior often leads to men insulting women, primarily because of the immense expectations women have from them.
In her own words:
“If you’re a woman living in a less affluent area and you’re pressuring a man to buy you a house in an upscale location, it doesn’t make sense. Can you afford it? Can you even move yourself out of your current situation? If he meets you halfway and you tell him, ‘Hey, I’ve worked hard to get this far, but I have a dream. My dream is not to stay where you found me, and I’m not lazy. You can see my dedication to reaching my goal. Are you willing to support me on this journey, or will you stay where you are?’ That’s the bottom line.”
In another one of her talk shows, Toke Makinwa revealed her perspective on why intimate relations with financially challenged men can be satisfying. She suggested that such men are more deliberate about their intimate encounters because they may have less to offer in other aspects of a relationship, and thus they focus their energy on providing a great sexual experience.
