Representative Chinwe Nnabuife has narrated the tragic incident in which Joe Moghalu, the Chairman of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in the Agbiligba Nanka ward of her constituency in Anambra, was fatally shot on Sunday, shortly after a stakeholders’ meeting.
Moghalu sustained gunshot wounds in the leg and stomach following a stakeholders’ meeting he had organized for Nnabuife on Saturday. The meeting aimed to discuss preparations for the upcoming yet-to-be-scheduled rerun election in the ward, mandated by the decisions of the election petition tribunal and Court of Appeal.
Nnabuife, representing Orumba North and Orumba South Federal Constituency, expressed her shock at the tragic turn of events. Despite having a productive meeting and leaving the venue approximately one hour before the incident, she received news of the brutal murder of the ward chairman and grassroots politician.
The lawmaker described the killing of her supporter as “inhumane and devastating.” Moghalu was immediately rushed to a hospital in Adazi Ani, but unfortunately, he could not be saved. He was later transferred to the teaching hospital in Nnewi, where his death was confirmed.
Nnabuife shared her grief, stating, “It is painful, they just killed a family man and a great political ally.” She highlighted that the assailants reportedly called him a saboteur three times while carrying out the attack, emphasizing that the runoff election was scheduled for that area.
Commissioner of Police in Anambra, CP Aderemi Adeoye, confirmed the incident and pledged that those responsible for the killing would face the full force of the law. Adeoye stated, “We shall follow it up, and whoever is responsible for killing him will have a date with the hangman.”
